Spinal Tap Bassist Releases Music Video for "It Don't Get Old"

Harry Shearer's beloved character from This Is Spinal Tap, bassist Derek Smalls, is nearing the release date for his solo album, Smalls Change (Meditations Upon Ageing).

Smalls just released the album's second single, "It Don't Get Old," a celebration of all the most token elements of being a rock band on tour.

In the album's liner notes, Shearer/Smalls writes of the song: "Life on the road, an endless series of pointless encounters. What could be better?"

The tune also features guitar playing and back vocals from Peter Frampton, though Frampton does not appear in the music video.

The video depicts a greying Smalls performing with his tackily outfitted band. In between shots of the performance for an adoring audience, we get to see the band backstage surrounding by all manner of groupies.

Smalls sings about the joys of the rock and roll lifestyle while also looking weary of the whole thing.

The bassist for the initially fictitious band from the 1984 film This Is Spinal Tap will release the LP on April 13.

Smalls Changes includes a number of high-profile special guests, including Frampton, David Crosby, Steve Vai, Steve Lukather, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, Steely Dan's Donald Fagen, Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, Dweezil Zappa and others.

Shearer has also announced plans to tour behind the release.

In a press release, Shearer described the album as "a poignant and oftentimes furious contemplation on aging that explores the passing of time and all things loud."

He promises the album runs the gamut of musical genres, all with the same "edgy rawness and Rock God sensibility" of Spinal Tap.

Shearer initially revealed his plans for the EP during a summer profile in GQ. He says the record deals with partying hard into your 70s and all the complications that come with it.
